When you operate a second-generation family-owned business, you need to know that your technology solutions stand up to the test of today’s technological landscape. In other words, you can’t be worried about things like whether your sensitive data is backed up and secured; you simply need to know that it is. Thankfully, that’s precisely what the Stenseng family at Culligan Water of the Rio Grande Valley found with Holly Fullingim and her team at Quick Compute, whose technological expertise and commitment to security have been helping them stay protected and efficient for nearly three decades.
Building A Dream
Tyler has been a part of Culligan Water for as long as he can remember. “My dad bought the business from his uncle in 1975,” he begins. “My parents had relocated from Minnesota because they wanted an opportunity to own and run their own business and control their own destiny. Back then, they were a really small business—only a handful of employees besides my parents—but it was their dream.” He continues, “So, I grew up working in the business on and off, during the summers mainly.” From deliveries to service, Tyler got a good taste of the business before deciding to head off to college and afterwards to pursue a career in the insurance industry for several years. Eventually, however, Tyler’s focus returned to the family business, with him becoming the general manager in 2011 before buying into the company and becoming the primary owner.
As you can imagine, an organization that’s been around for nearly 50 years has seen all kinds of changes, particularly with how technology has become integral to their business operations. “When the business first started, it was all manual procedures,” explains Tyler. “But then as technology became more accessible, there were demands for new infrastructure, which is when my parents brought Holly and her team in, whom I believe they found through a referral. Although I’m not entirely sure what year—somewhere in the mid-90s, I believe—Holly and her team would’ve been the ones to come in and help with setting up much of the initial technology of the company.”
The Criticality Of Security
And over the years, the company’s technology needs have only amplified. “Since I returned to Culligan full-time, I would say our biggest requirements are data backups and cybersecurity,” says Tyler. “I can’t do everything needed to keep our systems up-to-date and secure, nor do I have the time or knowledge, so it’s an easy decision for us to continue working with a vendor like Quick Compute. They’re the ones with the specialized skillset, so we trust them to protect our systems from intrusions and back up our sensitive client data.” Tyler adds, “Thankfully, with Quick Compute’s help, we’ve avoided any major debilitating incidents, which has helped us remain relatively efficient with little to no downtime.”
Beyond securing their systems and data, Quick Compute is also on hand to help with all their other technology needs. “There are ordinary things like hardware upgrades, but then there are the day-to-day challenges my staff [members] sometimes face,” mentions Tyler. “Oftentimes, it will just be little things that need to be corrected on an individual workstation, so they’ve done a lot of that for us. Another thing that comes to mind is how they’ve supported us through transitions with our other vendors. We utilize a proprietary operating system for our business, which has seen a lot of changes over the past decade. Quick Compute has been very hands-on throughout software and technology changes, working closely with us and helping wherever they can to ensure the smoothest transition possible.”
A Continued Commitment
For Tyler and his team at Culligan Water, what means the most is not having to think too much about their technology. “I’ve been a bit spoiled,” Tyler admits. “I don’t want to say I take their relationship for granted—that couldn’t be further from the truth—but I’ve grown used to their support.” Says Tyler, “I’m thankful to have them as a vendor. I can tell you that if we didn’t have them, I would be a lot more worried!”
Regarding what he would tell other business owners who need a robust technology partner, Tyler says, “Not every small business may be able to justify these types of services. However, unless you have a skilled, educated individual on your team to keep you protected, I would tell you to not hesitate to outsource these critical services. In today’s digitally malicious world, it’s not a choice to protect your business, it’s a necessity.”
Looking ahead, Tyler plans to continue on this technological trajectory. “We rely on Quick Compute to keep a steady eye on things and alert us when improvements need to be implemented,” he explains. “For us, it’s not necessarily about chasing the next big thing; it’s about optimizing what we’re already doing so that we can deliver our services to our clients better. And Quick Compute is a big part of that.”
Ultimately, it’s clear that Tyler’s parents made a solid choice when they opted to work with Holly and her team all those years ago. But this decades-long relationship has been anything but stagnant; rather, it’s grown and evolved into the blossoming partnership you see today. By taking the technology piece off of Tyler’s plate, he and his team can focus on doing what they do best—providing premier water treatment and filtration services to residential and commercial clients throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
